How to Choose an Office Chair: Ergonomics, Lumbar & Fit Guide

By Dr. Arjun Mehta • • 5 min read

Sitting for 8 to 10 hours daily places up to 190% greater compressive load on your lumbar intervertebral discs compared to standing with proper posture. Choosing the right chair is not about luxury—it is an orthopedic necessity.

1. Correct Seat Height Calibration

Your chair height should allow your feet to rest flat on the floor with your knees bent at approximately 90 to 100 degrees. Your thighs should remain parallel to the ground to ensure unimpeded blood circulation through the femoral artery.

2. Lumbar Curve Support

The lumbar support must fit directly into the inward lordotic curve of your lower back (around the L1–L5 vertebrae). Look for chairs with independent height and depth adjustments.
